I need help on starting a collection of baseball cards.?

Hey guys I need some help on how to start a collection baseball. I refer to the Topps collecting since I read that have the greatest value. What package should I start with? If I get 2008 Topps Series 2? (It costs $ 20 at Walmart and is a green box with a picture of Pujols). And also, what if I get that package is that the cards can be expected? So is a game used the card, who says he comes with one. Is a player a card in his pocket during a game? Please help, advice on the collection is appreciated. Thank you.
